Maple School PTO’s Meeting Recap

Maple School’s PTO Co-Presidents Christie Hartbarger and Sonia Rizki held a virtual meeting on Monday, January 25. Principal Samuel Kurtz and Assistant Principal Betty Holzkopf were also in attendance.

The Co-Presidents discussed fundraisers that have been held this year, despite the challenges of COVID-19, hybrid/remote learning, and adaptive pause. Mr. Kurtz gave a heartfelt “Thank you!" to the PTO for its steadfast support of the community and administration.

Ms. Hartbarger commented that although fall Book Fair sales were down, spirit wear sales were more successful than had been anticipated. She added that the three PTOs have been working together successfully to ensure that their respective Dine Out fundraisers do not overlap. She reminded everyone that on Tuesday, January 26, everyone is encouraged to order meals from Lou Malnati’s in Northbrook. Be sure to mention Maple School, and 20 percent of funds raised will be donated to Maple PTO.

Ms. Rizki reviewed that the fall district-wide virtual speaker presentation with Lisa Kaplin was a success. Ms. Kaplin is a professional coach, speaker, and psychologist, who helps people find success and happiness in all areas of their lives. She discussed ways in which parents and children could cope throughout these challenging times.

In addition, plans for Teacher Appreciation Week, Career Day, Summer School, and other presentations were outlined.

Principal Sam Kurtz addressed the PTO and expressed great appreciation for the ongoing support of our students and staff during the most unprecedented of times.

He assured everyone that "As we continue to teach hybrid and remotely, the community has done an incredible job of managing the adaptive pause.”

“Social-emotional learning (SEL) has remained on our forefront, as we continue to give each other grace. We are having fun, and our kids are engaged in several activities, i.e., the yearbook committee, Student Council, and more! Although it’s been a tough year, our students have attended school with a smile.”

He added that this year’s Career Day for eighth-graders will be focusing more on resume preparation with English Language Arts teachers, interviewing skills, and learning strategies for success.

Tentative Graduation is set for June 1 at Glenbrook South High School’s athletic field.

The Co-Presidents then thanked Mr. Kurtz and Ms. Holzkopf for all they do for our kids every day."

“If we can get through this year, we can get through anything,” concluded Mr. Kurtz.
