Maple Student Council Donates a Mountain of Toys to Those In Need
For over 25 years, Maple School Physical Education teacher and Student Council Co-sponsor, Lynn Reimer has been spearheading the annual toy drive. The past few years, she has shared this activity with fellow Co-sponsor Mandarin Chinese teacher, Iris Zhang. Together with Student Council members, teachers, students, and families, they coordinated and hosted myriad fundraisers to raise funds to purchase toys for the over 750 families in need in Northfield Township. They hosted a waffle breakfast, and popcorn and bake sales at sports events, the annual musical, and other activities. They are also holding a holiday raffle until December 17, when winners will be announced.
This year Willowbrook School decided to donate a portion of their toy drive collection to Maple too. The rest of their toys will go to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. On December 13, Northfield Township representatives came to pick up the toy collection, and found a mountain of games, giant stuffed animals, dolls, puzzles, sports equipment, and more, stacked on the new Maple School's Learning Stairs. It took about 45 minutes to empty the stairs, and haul the toys to awaiting cars and vans, where they were loaded up and delivered to families who rely on the Northfield Township Food Pantry for assistance.
Student Council members include Assistant Social Chair Ethan Pollack, Assistant Fund Chair Hanning Zhu, Social Chairperson Ethan Chiang, President Max Wadhwa, Vice President David Kang, Secretary Victoria Caputa, and Fund Chair Olivia Thursby.
Ms. Reimer reminds everyone, "There are still a few days left to participate in the Maple Holiday Toy Drive. The Student Council will be accepting toys and cash through Tuesday, December 17. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!"
Maple School's Student Council's Bountiful Breakfast Helps to Fund Toy Drive!
"I do not regret spending my last dollar on this piece of bacon," stated a Maple School student, as he happily left the breakfast line during the Student Council Waffle Breakfast fundraiser on December 10.
Student Council members, with Co-chairs Lynn Reimer and Iris Zhang, were excited to see how many students and staff members came for breakfast at the early hour of 7:40 a.m.
It was arranged to raise money to buy gift cards for teens-in-need, and for the annual toy drive, which is underway until December 13.
The Student Council served a full buffet of breakfast items which each cost a dollar. They included waffles, bacon, bananas, Dunkin Donuts, juice, hot chocolate (with marshmallows), bagels, and mini-muffins (due to their size, the muffins only cost a quarter).
Principals Dr. Nate Carter and Betty Holzkopf served the waffles, which were "selling like hotcakes!"
Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley enjoyed some breakfast and visited with the students and staff, and complimented them on their effort and generous spirit.
