Students Serving Others in New Summer School Class - First Project is Food Drive!

Maple Summer School's Service Projects class with Leora Kurtz encourages families, students and staff to bring at least one food, paper or toiletry item to Maple Summer School from between Monday, June 26-Friday, June 30. Supplies collected will be donated to the Northfield Township Food Pantry, which feeds over 750 families in the township. In the summer, the pantry shelves are not as full as other times of year, so it is important to help keep them stocked.

"This new course was designed and implemented by sixth through eighth grade students who wanted to get involved in their community. Students are researching different charities in the area, setting-up fundraising events, and traveling to different organizations, such as the local food pantry, animal shelters, or assisted-living homes," said Ms. Kurtz.

A Letter from Superintendent Dr. Brian K. Wegley:

New Maple Design Progressing

In the Fall of 2016, the District 30 Board of Education entered into an inclusive process that generated District 30’s Master Facility Plan. The process included input from all stakeholders:

  • Community Members
  • Parents
  • Students
  • Staff
  • Administration
  • Board of Education

Leadership for this process was provided by our Board, Administrative Team, a Steering Committee (board members, administrators, teachers, parents, and community members), and a 34-member Citizens’ Task Force (District 30 parents, local business and real-estate leaders, village representatives, community members, building principals, and a teacher from each building). The wealth of information generated in our Master Facility Planning process was utilized to create a preliminary design of a new Maple School.

On April 4, 2017, the community delivered District 30 a mandate to replace Maple School when 76% of the community voted yes for the facility bond referendum that grew out of this planning process. Once our community approved, the administrative team began utilizing the information generated for our Master Facility Planning process to finalize plans for a new Maple School. This important work continues to evolve with input from our teachers, students, administrative team, community members, architects, construction management firm, and consultants.

District 30 recently earned a Triple-A (AAA) Bond Rating with a Stable distinction from Standard and Poor’s. This strong rating is important because it provides us with an “exceptional degree of creditworthiness,” which will keep the rates on our bonds as low as possible.

Our goal remains to break ground on our current soccer field by April of 2018, to occupy a new Maple School in the Fall of 2019, and to allow current middle school and summer school programming to continue in the current Maple School during construction.

Our realization of a new Maple School will:

  • Eliminate the need for millions of dollars of maintenance for the current Maple School
  • Add two additional classrooms which will increase flexibility and capacity for future enrollment growth and additions
  • Create two drop-off lanes with significantly increased car-staging zones and safety
  • Create full-size science classrooms with fully-functional labs
  • Generate adequately-sized music, art, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) rooms
  • Cluster grade-levels together with collaborative learning space
  • Locate student services (our nurse and psychologists) in a confidential area
  • Allow for public spaces (e.g. the music areas and gym space) to be isolated from the academic areas of the building
  • Create a “Cafetorium” that allows for after-school activities and performances without interference with physical education and after-school athletics
  • Introduce natural light to virtually every student space
  • Increase energy efficiency including the replacement of 37 rooftop heating and air-conditioning units with more efficient centralized systems
  • We invite the District 30 Community to keep up with the progress on our new Maple School through the http://www.d30facilities.org/ website. This website includes Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and the most recent design progress. Once construction begins, this site will include regular updates on progress.

"Thank you again to our supportive community and to all of those giving their time freely to generate an outstanding plan for the new Maple School." concluded Dr. Wegley.

District Welcomes Input from Task Force on Plans for New Maple School

On May 23, Jeff Huck, director of design for ARCON, spoke to members of District 30's Citizens Task Force about the schematic design and latest design development stages, currently underway for the new Maple School. He reviewed the tentative schedule, from design, construction and bidding, to ending with the opening of the new Maple in Fall 2019.

ARCON is the facility design company that District 30 has been working with this past year on its master facility plans. They now include a new Maple School and life/safety improvements for Wescott and Willowbrook Schools, due to the passage of a facility bond referendum in April.

After the bond referendum passed, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Brian Wegley assured the community in a letter that "we will continue to include the voice of District 30 stakeholders in our planning, and we will keep our community well-informed."

The evening of May 23, gave members of the Citizens Task Force the opportunity to provide input into the design process of Maple School. Post-it notes were handed out to the audience, and the residents scribbled their ideas, which were then placed on poster boards of tentative building plans for the school, that were provided by ARCON.

Dr. Wegley stated that the district has met with many other groups to gather valuable information for the new building. These groups have included administrators, faculty, Board of Education members, the Village of Northbrook, Northbrook Fire Department, District 225, peer school tours, user groups and students. He added that the students came up with over 150 ideas for the new school!

The design development phase runs from May until July 2017. This will also entail input from administrators, teachers and staff about specific needs of each space. Dr. Wegley will be keeping the community informed on his blog, via letters, and social media.

District 30's Facility Bond Referendum Passed This Year!

Posted on April 5, 2017 by Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley:

“District 30 has the kids; the faculty and staff; the leadership; the community. The only thing you are missing is the facilities.”  - District 30 Parent’s Statement During Master Facility Planning

As District 30 embarked on updating our Master Facility Plan, the above quote summarized what drove this facility process. Our Master Facility Plan was shared with a Steering Committee and Citizens’ Task Force, who unanimously recommended that our Board of Education pursue a Facility Bond Referendum, which included the building of a new Maple School, and completion of required Health/Life-Safety work at Wescott  and Willowbrook Schools.

It appears that the April 4, 2017, Facility Bond Referendum for District 30 was supported by the community by a substantial margin. Therefore, District 30 will continue planning for a new Maple School, as we begin completing the Health/Life-Safety work at Wescott and Willowbrook. Moving forward, we will include the voice of District 30 stakeholders in our planning, and we will keep our community well-informed.

Thank you to the citizens who actively engaged in one of our 14 tours of Maple School, who hosted or attended one of the 10 community coffees, and who worked to make sure the community was informed about our options. Throughout this effort, our community has demonstrated character and civility. I have appreciated the respectful, open conversation and learning that has occurred as we shared District 30’s facility issues and options.

I want to personally thank our staff, Board of Education, parents, and community who provided input into the District 30 Master Facility Plan. I have every confidence that District 30 will intelligently and responsibly work to create a middle school that aligns with our educational vision and supports the high expectations that we all share for the education that we provide for our students.

In addition, Tuesday’s election resulted in the election of the three board members who ran for three open seats. On April 27, 2017, our Board of Education will welcome back Mrs. Ursula Sedlak, as we welcome Mr. Jeffrey Zuercher and Mr. Keith Karchmar. I know our community appreciates these individuals for the service that they will provide District 30. At the same time, we have two seasoned board members who will retire from service to District 30. Please join me in thanking Dr. Kenneth Spero and Mr. Fred Sloneker for their commitment to District 30. They have served our district with dedication and distinction, and they will truly be missed!

Thank you again to our community for your partnership and support in providing our students with outstanding learning opportunities. District 30 will continue to create a community that craves learning, fosters resiliency, and cares deeply for every child.

Gratefully,

Dr. Brian K. Wegley
Superintendent of Schools
