Maple's Service Learning Club Collection for Ukraine Surpasses Expectations

March 10 - District 30 Supports The People of Ukraine - Update

Thank you so very much to those who have donated items for the citizens of Ukraine. Maple's Service Learning Club students and staff were overwhelmed by the donations received this past week.

On Thursday, March 10, Service Learning Club students with teacher leaders Jillian Rathge and April Lobo, and nurse Katie Weissler, Jackie Ruf, Kathy Janca, and Nancy Lifshitz, with many additional student volunteers, sorted the thousands of items that have been generously donated this week by our kind community.

This included food, diapers, backpacks, blankets, toiletries, cat and dog food, and first aid items, which were piled up along the hallway and in extra classrooms at Maple School.

One eighth-grade student solemnly gathering boxes of diapers in the corner was Lina Troschhenko, who moved to Chicago five years ago from Ukraine. So this effort was hitting very close to home for her. Her family connected Maple staff to the Varenychok restaurant in Buffalo Grove, which has been accepting donations for Ukraine.

At the restaurant's counter sat stickers stating, "Stop Putin, Stop War," and "Pray for Ukraine," which were placed next to a mug filled with tiny American flags.

After Kathy Janca dropped off a carload of supplies on Thursday night, Varenychok restaurant had run out of room, so future donations will be directed to another destination for shipment.

The representative at Varenychok was grateful for the care and citizenship that has been demonstrated city-wide for Ukraine.

Next week, Wescott and Willowbrook Schools will begin their collections for Ukraine.

As Fred Rogers (actually his mother) reminded us when things get frightening, "There are always the helpers. Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."
