I hope this email finds you doing well as we navigate this winter together! Our last Board of Education Meeting included the following relevant items:
Character Counts Award Winners Recognized
The Board recognized eleven District 30 students for winning the recent Character Counts Poster and Video Contests! Dr. Carlson and Mr. Kurtz shared the winning posters and videos, and Mrs. Blonder shared the immense pride our Board of Education has in character shown by our students highlighted in this contest. The themes focused around “Who is your hero?” and students were reminded that next year’s Hero Hustle T-Shirt would include one of the images from our poster contest. We were honored to be joined by Mr. Scott Raeker, the Executive Director of the Global Character Counts Organization housed at Drake University. Congratulations to our students, and thank you to our parents for making parent a verb. We are thankful for our outstanding students!
Operations Update
The Board shared sincere appreciation for our staff’s commitment, students’ engagement, and parents’ partnership.
Dr. Wegley reviewed local COVID-19 metrics that remain high with significant declines. The Board celebrated the normalcy being generated in our schools by our staff. They also reinforced that we will continue to follow health guidance as it evolves. District 30’s continues observing masking and COVID-19 related student isolation/quarantining that are universally recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Illinois State Board of Education ( ISBE), and the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH).
English Language Arts Grades K-2 Summer Curriculum Report
Multiple staff members presented their summer curriculum work on ELA for grades K-2. There was an emphasis shared on evolving the ELA curriculum maps, integrating a structured phonics approach utilizing Calkins materials, and the continued focus on scaffolding the instructional experiences throughout the curriculum in each of our K-2 classrooms.
Elementary Art K-2 Summer Curriculum Report
Summer Curriculum Work committee members shared their concept mapping of the National Core Arts Standards for the K-5 Art experience. Concept mapping continues to evolve, with scaffolded art skills integrated into our K-2 curriculum maps for Art. Work included an awesome sharing of the projects students across grade levels K-5th have created for the school year. In addition, our Board was engaged in creating and sharing their art project using paper strips, markers, and a glue stick!
Our next Board Meeting will be on February 17, 2022. All are welcome!
