Wescott Celebrates Veterans during Honor Flight Chicago's 100th Flight on April 13

"Thank you for your support of Honor Flight Chicago over the last few years. It is an exciting opportunity for both students and our veterans. I want you to know how much these letters mean to our Veterans!" said first-grade teacher Sharon Latek, and Honor Flight Chicago liaison with Wescott School PTO's Helping Hands Committee.

On April 13th, Honor Flight Chicago will be making its 100th flight. Wescott's Helping Hands Committee is celebrating this historic flight with a day of activities to support the veterans!

Students and staff are being asked to wear red, white, and blue on April 13. In addition, there will be a six-foot banner of an airplane (Thank you art teacher Andrea Manning!) for every Wescott student and teacher to sign. That evening, Sharon Latek and her daughter Jayne Latek will bring the banner to greet the veterans upon their return to Midway Airport.

Music teacher Quentin Coaxum and orchestra teacher Alexis Barret are putting together a patriotic video that was shared after morning announcements. This video was also being shared with Honor Flight Chicago! Principal Dr. Chris Brown will announce how many veterans we were able to send to Honor Flight Chicago through the Helping Hands and Square One Art Project!

During the day, every classroom was asked to participate in a mail call activity. The cards and letters created by students will be shared with veterans on their return flights.

"These messages are very meaningful to the recipient, as often the veterans may not have a family to support them," said Ms. Latek.

Finally, on April 13th new mascot Winnie the wolf visited the classrooms to celebrate Wescott's students and Helping Hands' involvement with Honor Flight Chicago!
