October 8 Board Brief

October 8 Board Brief

Dear District 30 Family,

Thank you to all members of the District 30 Family for your continued partnership through this year. Everyone’s commitment and extra effort make a difference every day. Also, please remember to take care of yourselves and each other. We will make it through this together. Yesterday’s Board of Education meeting included the following relevant items:

Bond Resolution Approved

The Board adopted a resolution providing for the issuance of $14M General Obligation Limited Tax School Bonds. These funds, along with $1.5M from its operating funds, will support the District’s Elementary Capacity Project that will break ground next spring.

Maple Wrestling Team Coop Reauthorized

Although wrestling will not occur this year, the Board reauthorized the IESA Application for Cooperative Team Participation and Team Agreement. The agreement generates this athletic opportunity to Maple School, Wood Oaks Junior High, Northbrook Junior High School, Field Middle School, Attea Middle School, and Springman Middle School through the 2021-22 school years.

FY 2020 Financial Audit Approved

The Board officially accepted the 2020 fiscal year audit as prepared by the district's auditors, Miller, Cooper & Co., Ltd. District 30 received the auditor’s highest level of assurance with an unmodified “clean” opinion.

Discussion/Information Items

K-5 Report Card Curriculum Report

Thank you to Rita Field, Robyn Kogan, and Kery Obradovich, who presented and led the recent summer work of finalizing the new K-5 report cards. Highlights of the presentation included the evolution of the new K-5 report cards, sharing the SEL facets within the report cards, and the ways comments are crafted and displayed. Thank you to the entire committee for their thoughtful work that aligns with our standards and growth mindset focus!

Remote Learning Report

Dr. Kohl presented on the summer committee work that developed our remote learning strategy if District 30 schools would have to suspend in-person learning within our school buildings. The summer committee adjusted schedules to maximize instructional time and balance learning styles and reviewed best practices, established norms, and guidelines for remote learning students. Thank you to Dr. Kohl and the entire committee for their thoughtful work on evolving our eLearning plans!

2021-22 School Calendar

The Board reviewed a draft 2021-22 School Calendar that will provide an extended summer to support our elementary construction project. The first day for students will likely be on September 1 or 2, 2021. To incorporate this late start and end the school year by Tuesday, June 14, 2022, we are tentatively planning to attend school on Columbus Day, Veterans Day, and Presidents’ Day. Winter and Spring Breaks will remain aligned across Northfield Township.

The Board of Education will discuss and finalize the 2021-22 calendar at its October 22 Board Meeting.

NSSED Report

Mrs. Artz presented an update on NSSED’s last meeting that included an update on their budgeted revenues and expenditures, professional learning innovation work, and board policy updates. I thanked Mrs. Artz for her continued service on this second board.

Thank you all for your care and commitment to our students and each other. Enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian K. Wegley
Superintendent
