Induction and Mentoring

The purpose of this Induction and Mentoring Program is to provide a structured program of support throughout the first two years of employment in District 30. This includes meetings with a seasoned mentor, workshops on relevant educational topics, and opportunities for observation and reflection.

Program Design:

Northbrook / Glenview District 30 Induction and Mentoring Program includes Year One and Year Two teachers, mentors and Academy coaches.

Mentor requirements:

  • Apply and be approved by building principal
  • Complete District 30’s Mentor Training Program
  • Be tenured in District 30
  • Attend designated sessions during Protégé Orientation
  • Observe protégés three times in Year One and facilitate protégé observations of two experienced teachers in Year Two
  • Facilitate 24 individual mentor/protégé meetings in Year One and 12 meetings in Year Two, utilizing the designated monthly checklists
  • Attend seven Academy workshops in Year One and the December workshop in Year Two
  • Provide quarterly written feedback on protégé self-reflections in Year One
  • Attend an approved off-site conference or workshop with protégé (optional)

Protégé requirements:

  • Attend 2 ½ day Protégé Orientation prior to opening day
  • Complete three formal observations for mentor in Year One and observe two experienced teachers in Year Two               
  • Participate in 24 individual mentor/protégé meetings in Year One and 12 meetings in Year Two, utilizing the designated monthly checklists
  • Attend seven Academy workshops in Year One and the December workshop in Year Two
  • Prepare quarterly written self-reflections in Year One
  • Attend an approved off-site conference or workshop in Year Two (two-day equivalent)

Academy Coach requirements:

  • Possess strong subject matter knowledge and experience related to assigned Academy topic
  • Prepare and facilitate one Academy workshop

  • To promote a collaborative, supportive, and reflective environment of ongoing professional growth
  • To integrate new teachers into the culture of the Northbrook/Glenview District 30 community
  • To provide orientation, training, and continuing support in the areas of curriculum, instruction,  assessment, and communication
  • To develop the essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values vital for asuccessful teaching career
  • To retain highly qualified new and experienced teachers
  • To promote personal and professional development and well-being
