Superintendent's Message on Valuing District 30's Diversity

Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley's Message to the District 30 Family

During this busy time, I cannot stop thinking about the multiple events continuing to surround our school communities and the community at large. Right now, we are living through a time of turmoil, as we continue to navigate a global pandemic and comprehend demonstrations and complex conflict across communities throughout our country. The tragic death of George Floyd sparked anger, followed by protests that began elsewhere. Our area has demonstrated examples of peaceful calls for change, coupled with concerning events that can distract us from our responsibility to work against racial injustice.

A childhood hero of mine, Mr. Fred Rogers, once shared, “When I was a boy, and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

I continue to be proud to live in and serve our community that values diversity and is full of “helpers” who foster an inclusive world.

Here are some valuable resources that our librarians and other experts shared that may be helpful when discussing these recent events with your children of all ages:

Take care, and I know we can, and we will get through these challenging times together as we work toward solutions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian K. Wegley
