District 30 Family 4/10 Weekly Update

Dear District 30 Family,

I hope that you are all continuing to do well! In addition to touching base with the members of our family, this email is to share this week’s update from our Glenview/Northbrook COVID-19 Task Force. Please note the NorthShore University HealthSystem advocacy for individuals who display coronavirus symptoms to reach out and be screened for testing. I continue to be thankful for the coordination and collaboration between our villages and leaders to help us navigate this situation.

We had a great week of learning in District 30. This week included online faculty meetings, Wescott held a virtual spirit week, and Willowbrook had 2 students who submitted a teacher Shout Out to the Fox News Good Vibes segment. Maple students attended a virtual advisory meeting each day, and our Service Learning Club helped organize get well cards for COVID-19 patients.

We were also proud to find out that Learning By Design Magazine bestowed our district with a grand prize award in the “educational facility design” of Maple School. The article focused particularly on the special attributes of Maple School’s library media center.

I encourage all of us to focus on the caring and giving that is taking place throughout our community, as we support each other through this challenging time together. Beyond the heroic efforts being demonstrated by our medical community, consider Board Member Jeff Zuercher, who was part of the team constructing a 3,000-bed COVID-19 care center in McCormick Place in Chicago with the Army Corps of Engineers. His team now shifts their expertise to Milwaukee!

In addition, our families have made lunches for essential workers, bought food for our medical teams, and neighbors are buying groceries for those impacted by this virus. District 30’s efforts have now expanded to share used science goggles for Cook County Hospitals, and our community is providing ongoing support to our Northfield Food Pantry, whose demands have understandably risen. Our community continues to crave learning and foster resiliency, as we care for each other deeply. I am so proud to be a part of this community!

A few key reminders:

  • There will be a Planning Day on Monday, April 13, to support our continued evolution and teamwork around our e-Learning effort. In addition, we will offer another Global Learning Lesson to students on that day. Plans for the day will be emailed to students and parents by 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
  • Keep checking our Parent School Closure and e-Learning FAQ - We will keep it updated and will add answers to important questions that arise, as we all navigate our new, temporary normal.
  • Also, with the Stay-At-Home order in place, our buildings will remain closed

We would all rather be in-person and miss the energy of our schools and the gifts we enjoyed every day. Our e-Learning effort doesn’t replace the richness of our classrooms but will continue to provide normalcy and the focus required to remain connected. Clarity will eventually emerge on how and when our daily lives will be restored. Although we don’t have a timeline on returning right now, we do have the certainty that we will continue working through this together with grace, support, and appreciation for family, friends, and colleagues. We are also absolutely certain that when we return to our classrooms, we will meet our students where they are and move forward together!

Warmly,

Dr. Brian K. Wegley
Superintendent
