Lew Blond Run Information

Mark your calendars for 8:00 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2020, at Maple School. It’s the anniversary date for the 20th Annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Run. This fundraiser draws over 1,000 participants and volunteers to Maple School in May. This year there will be a new course! Read more about this amazing fundraiser at lewblondrun.org

A family-oriented event, the Lew Blond Run honors Mr. Lew Blond, a former Maple School teacher who passed away in 2000 from Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). An exceptional and dedicated educator of the applied arts, he was revered and cherished by students, colleagues, and parents of the children he served.

Proceeds from the Lew Blond Run are donated to the Les Turner ALS Foundation and used for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research. District 30 was honored with a Volunteer of the Year Award by the Les Turner ALS Foundation for its long-term support of ALS research through the Lew Blond Run. Funds raised from the race also support special school projects and provide annual scholarships to graduating seniors and former Maple School students from Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools.

All community members are welcome to participate, volunteer, or to be a sponsor of the Lew Blond Run! For more information, go to lewblondrun.org and the Lew Blond Run’s Facebook page, or contact Maple School Principal and Lew Blond Run Executive Committee chair, Dr. Nate Carter at 847-400-8900.

Sponsors and volunteers are needed to form committees to help fund and coordinate this event. If you can help support the Lew Blond Run, please contact Roy Grober at rgrober@district30.org or Michelle Rosen mrosen@district30.org

Lew Blond Race Keeps the Pace for 19th Year

On May 18, around 7:00 a.m., there was not a cloud in the sky, or birds, just Steve Grundy's faithful drone, ready to record the annual District 30 Lew Blond Run for the last time at the old Maple School grounds. Behind the Lew Blond Run banner, construction workers were working on the roof, putting the finishing touches on the new Maple School, which will be ready in a few short weeks!

At 8:00 a.m. sharp, District 30's largest fundraising event, the 19th annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Run welcomed over 750 participants and volunteers, who embraced the day, with passion, sweat, tenacity, and happy tears.

Maple School Principal and Executive Chair of the Lew Blond Run Executive Committee, Dr. Nate Carter addressed everyone prior to the race, and Les Turner ALS' Andrea Pauls Backman thanked the community for their support of ALS research for all of these years. For 18 years, the event has helped fund ALS research in memory of Maple teacher Lew Blond, who had ALS. The race proceeds also provide scholarships for high school seniors at District #225, and provides our students with special entities at the schools, like the new All-Abilities Playground at Maple School. After the run, David Abraham, Lew Blond Executive Committee member, announced winners of the race in each age bracket, and Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley presented medals to each of the winners.

"We are so grateful for all of the community and staff support - and for our 23 wonderful sponsors, and vendors of the event. To echo Maple School's motto, "We couldn't do it alone," said Assistant Principal Betty Holzkopf.

Lew Blond's family were wholeheartedly welcomed again this year. They included Therese Davis, Blond’s 94-year-old mother, Mariette Blond; his sister Barb Blond; his sister-in-law, Brenda Blond; and his niece, Amy Cornett, who came from Maine with her daughters, Caroline, 8, and Victoria, 6.

Dr. Carter stated, "Our Lew Blond Run Executive Committee members should be congratulated for once again facilitating a well-run event, from start to finish! Thank you to our District 30 learning and parent communities from Willowbrook, Wescott, and Maple! A very special thank you to our Maple office team: Michelle Rosen, Nancy Lifshitz, Kathy Janca, and Betty Holzkopf! I must also commend Director of Buildings and Grounds Don Zabski and his team. Nothing happens without his awesome crew and their support!"

He added, "Lew Blond's memory continues to live on in our Northbrook/Glenview communities because of the many people who give of their time and energy to the Lew Blond Run."

"Thank you to the District 30 Family for another awesome Lew Blond Run! Everyone enjoyed a beautiful morning run that benefits the Les Turner ALS Foundation and the Maple Playground!" said Superintendent Dr. Wegley.
