Fifth Grader Ellory Moran Honored at the IPA Student Recognition Breakfast!

Dr. Carlson's weekly update, "The Illinois Principals Association – North Cook Region’s Annual Student Recognition Breakfast is one of my very favorite events of the year. Dr. Brown and I had the opportunity to each bring a fifth-grade student to be recognized this morning. Our student was Ellory Moran!  Students are nominated by the teaching staff for demonstrating responsibility, dedication to school… a positive person to know. As you can imagine, it is a challenge to select only one student each year. We have a building full of students who meet this criteria!

Elk Grove Village H.S. Principal Paul Kelly hosted a great event that included guest speaker, Jimmy Chamberlin. While Mr. Chamberlin is best known for being the drummer of the Smashing Pumpkins, he should be known for his work to support educators in Illinois. Since leaving the band, Mr. Chamberlin has served on school boards, taught music, and launched technology companies. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Columbia College-Chicago.

Mr. Chamberlin opened his talk by discussing his two biggest influences – his father and his first-grade teacher. His father taught him the importance of passion and hard work (he worked on the railroad). His teacher taught him “how to celebrate his uniqueness… and ignited a passion for life long learning”. She also taught him a means to hold himself accountable. Mr. Chamberlin went on to emphasize the importance of engaging children and celebrating their individual differences. After all, “It is the inconsistencies in our personality that define us and bring value to our culture”.

I felt pride in District 30 and our students. I believe we strive to advance our students’ academic, social-emotional, and artistic growth. I also felt pride in the larger education profession. I expected to recognize a deserving student this morning. I did not expect to receive inspiration from the drummer of one of my favorite teenage rock bands."

Willowbrook Celebrates 50 in Style

On February 22, Willowbrook School went all out during its birthday celebration of 50 years on Happy Hollow Road in Glenview!

Principal Dr. Scott Carlson and staff members have been collecting stories from past Willowbrook teachers and alums. Classrooms were assigned decades and decorated their classrooms and themselves with paraphernalia symbolic from that particular era.

Grade level eras:
Grade 5 - 1960s
Grade 4 - 1970s
Grade 3 - 1980s
Grade 2 - 1990s
Grade 1 and Preschool - 2000s
Kindergarten - 2010s

Prior to the celebration assembly in the gymnasium, everyone enjoyed parading through the building viewing grade level door decorations and the variety of clothes designs from the past decades.

The assembly began with third-grade Flag Raisers Teddy Mikroulis, Tyler Shinsky, Nina Sikaras, Aidan Barry, Maddie Goldwin, and Sobha Singh. The audience sang "The National Anthem" and recited the "Pledge of Allegiance."

No celebration is complete without song and dance. Each grade level chose a popular dance from their decade to showcase.

Grade five did "The Twist"; Grade four performed "The Hustle"; and Grade three reenacted 80’s dance moves to Michael Jackson's "Beat It."

The younger kids enjoyed bouncing around to "The Macarena" (second grade); The "Cha Cha Slide" was performed by grade one and preschoolers; and Kindergartners concluded the series with "Can't Stop the Feeling."

A group of teachers and students then participated in "Jeopardy: Willowbrook Edition," where everyone was encouraged to try and answer questions about Willowbrook's past.

The assembly concluded on a lively note with the school song.
