Importance of Play in Kindergarten

  • We believe a balance between direct instruction of academic content and play is developmentally appropriate.

  • The “21st Century Learning Skills” of creativity, problem solving skills and collaboration can be developed through structured and unstructured play.  This is a “season of opportunity” to establish critical habits of mind.

  • We emphasize the process of learning and creativity over the product developed.

  • Play offers a window into a child’s thinking.  Play is how children make sense of their world and assimilate new information.

  • Play can be used for self-discovery.

There are no standardized or formal assessments given to students in Kindergarten (i.e., PARCC). However, our teaching team utilizes a wide variety of formative assessments and diagnostic tools to inform their teaching decisions and measure student growth.  These include, but are not limited to, informal reading inventories, curriculum-based measurements, written language rubrics, and structured observation of student behavior.  Parents receive progress updates throughout the school year via parent-teacher conferences, report cards, and other informal conferences as needed.

The Northbrook Park District partners with School District 30 to offer the following extended care programs during the school year for children in grades K-5:  Adventure Campus, before and after school care, school day-off programs, and winter and spring break holiday programs.  For more information, go to
