Willowbrook School fifth-grade teacher Betsie Onsrud recently shared, “All three fifth-grade classes are participating in a very special intergenerational project with senior residents from Covenant Living in Northbrook, which coincides with an upcoming film "Lives Well Lived," which debuts on May 16.

Meave Foley, assisted living specialist at Covenant Living, had reached out to me awhile ago, because my mother is a resident there at Axelson Assisted Living. She felt it was important to connect the children with the senior residents, especially during this challenging time. My students were already working on a project that focused on life in the 1930s. Other classes were working on their parts, which included patriotism and hobbies of the 1940s."

As a result, a wonderful connection and collaboration occurred between the young and senior population at Covenant Living!

“Mrs. Onsrud's class had read about how people distracted themselves from the deprivations of their daily lives during the Great Depression. The students shared what they learned with our residents, and peppered them with questions. They recorded it on their iPads at home, and our residents viewed it. We have started working on the second part of this project focusing on the 1940s with the two other fifth-grade classes from Willowbrook - with more to come!" said Ms. Foley.

In addition, Covenant Living has partnered with the Northbrook Public library to offer a special screening of the film “Lives Well Lived." It is available for 24 hours starting Saturday, May 16 through May 17.

"This film celebrates the incredible wit, wisdom, and experiences of adults aged 75 to 100 years old. They have seen the best and the worst of humanity along the way, but their stories are inspiring. Our residents at Covenant Living have been participating in our own 'Words of Wisdom' campaign to share what has uplifted them in difficult times in their lives. Their messages are a gift as we navigate these uncertain times," said Ms. Foley.

Individuals can also sign up through the Northbrook Public Library site for a virtual Q/A with the filmmaker, Sky Bergman, at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, May 18 at https://visit.northbrook.info/events?t=movies&v=grid

"Words of Wisdom" from Covenant Living residents continue to be featured on their Facebook page, so make sure to follow them!
