Dr. Wegley's June 13, 2019 Board Brief

Our recent Board of Education meeting included the following relevant items:

Personnel Report

The Board formally approved Mr. Benjamin Clemons as our next Director of Bands. Mr. Burdi’s FTE was increased to teach PE full-time next year at Wescott and Willowbrook, and Mrs. Jeanne Mills will take over full-time clerical duties at Wescott. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Clemons and thanking Mr. Burdi and Mrs. Mills for their service to the District 30 Family!

The Board also approved Mrs. Sara Weinstein’s retirement from District 30 this year and Mrs. Liliam Alvarez-Connolly’s retirement at the end of the 2022-23 School Year. Congratulations to both!

The Board approved the resignations of Mrs. Colleen Bessette and Mrs. Debbie Hickey, and they were informed of an upcoming FMLA.

Staffing Plan Update

I shared current enrollment numbers across District 30 with our Board of Education. We currently have 115 kindergarteners and have just enrolled our 91st third-grade student at Wescott. In response to the third-grade enrollment, we added a fifth third-grade section as projected. We look forward to filling this position soon.

I also informed the Board of Education that the open Speech position at Maple (0.6 FTE) would be increased to 1.0 FTE. The additional FTE supports the needs traditionally provided to our Educational Life Skills (ELS) class through NSSED.

Strategic Planning Update

Our administrative team provided an update of progress on our District 30 Strategic Planning Work:

Goal 1: Increase District 30’s capacity to systemically collaborate within grade-level teams to execute the cycle of continuous instructional improvement by:

  1. Generating a cost-neutral way to provide time for meaningful grade-level collaboration

  2. Defining collaborative norms for grade-level collaboration

  3. Establishing protocols for continuous instructional improvement (e.g. analyzing local common assessment data)

Goal 2: Ensure District 30 facilities possess the capacity to support our evolving and emerging programs and contribute to optimal educational experiences by:

  1. Leveraging and managing supported funding options for one-time debt management for the new Maple/DO Project

  2. Implementing supported Master Facility Plan options that:

    1. Build the new Maple School and campus

    2. Update operations to support our new Maple School

  3. Updating the Master Facility Plan to:

    1. Define the flexible furniture that will be integrated in our elementary schools to support our educational vision

    2. Incorporate capacity needs at our elementary schools that support enrollment projections

  4. Generating continuous updates on construction to District 30 Stakeholders

I highlighted our Time Committee’s successful creation of common collaborative planning time for our core elementary teachers along with the successful completion of our new Maple School. Both will positively impact generations of students! Thank you to our team and everyone involved in our improvement efforts this year.

Board Reports

Mrs. Nancy Artz summarized NSSED’s most recent Leadership Council Meeting that included updates on their communication efforts, their professional learning support, and the approval of NSSED’s FY 2020 budget. Mrs. Zivit Blonder shared an overview of the latest Character Counts Meeting. She shared two community runs for next year that included the Hero Hustle Run on September 8, 2019, along with the Lew Blond Run on May 16, 2020. She noted that next year’s Lew Blond Run would be its 20th on a new course that will be approved by CARA this summer. She also highlighted Character Counts upcoming participation in Glenview's July 4th Parade and asked that candy donations be turned in at Maple’s new front office.

Finally, I celebrated the positive, trusting tone set by our Board of Education, along with the care and teaming accomplished by our Administrative Team for each other and our staff. I also emphasized my pride in the fact that District 30 continues to partner with our communities to provide our students with a great place to grow up as we place them on a positive trajectory for their future!
