Dr. Wegley's Blog Update - District 30’s Board of Education Approves Contracts to Support Construction of New Maple School

On February 8, the Board of Education approved the individual contracts that support the construction of the new Maple School. Based on these awarded contracts, the total cost of the new Maple School remains within the $40.6 million budget.

In 2016, District 30 began an in-depth review of our organization’s facilities. Our master facility planning process resulted in a focus on a new Maple Middle School and the health/life-safety work at our elementary schools with a total cost of $41.5 million. Of that total, $40.6 million was the budget for the new Maple School. To generate needed funding, District 30 is investing $5.2 million from our fund balance that will be combined with $36.3 million in facility bonds which were approved by 76% of our community in last year’s referendum.

After an initial pre-construction meeting on December 20, 2017, the bids for the construction of the project were accepted, opened, and read at 4:30 p.m. on January 24, 2018.  Sealed bids were opened from 70 bidders.  The scope of work was broken down into the following bid/trade packages: asphalt paving and fencing, excavation, concrete, masonry, structural steel, general trades, roofing, aluminum windows and doors, flooring, kitchen equipment, interior furnishings, fire protection, plumbing, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and electrical.  The bid packages included additional scopes of work (i.e., alternates) for possible consideration pending final budgetary considerations.

The most notable alternate approved on February 8 was the construction of a second-floor District Office, to replace the current administration trailers that will be vacated and torn down in March, to make room for the new Maple School. After examining several long-term options, the Board of Education determined that the most responsible choice was to build the District Office on the top of Maple School, while it is under construction. The total cost of the District Office will be under $2 million, and financing will occur out of operating expenses, with a price that is less than leasing.

Superintendent Dr. Wegley shared, “We are thrilled that we will have the opportunity to construct the modern, flexible, comprehensive, and responsible new Maple School that we have designed and that it will be within the budget.”

Board President Chuck Gitles reflected on this journey, “It is always sad to see the demolition of a building that was the home to the formative years of so many children, myself included. However, the Board must look forward, not back. We must provide the community with what they have asked for: A facility capable of supporting the educational demands of students in the 21st Century.”
