From Superintendent Dr. Brian K. Wegley

The October 3, 2019 Board of Education meeting included the following relevant items:

Staff Recognitions
On behalf of the Board, Dr. Carter recognized Sarah Arends for being an Edyth May Sliffe MMA AMC Award 2018-19 Recipient. Also, Dr. Brown celebrated Talia Block’s 2018 ICTFL Distinguished Educator Award.

Congratulations to Sarah and Talia, who are most deserving of these recognitions for their impacts on their respective disciplines and District 30!

Eighth-Grade Washington DC Trip Approved The Board approved this year’s Eighth-Grade Washington DC Trip from May 6, 2020, to May 8, 2020. The Board joined me in sharing their appreciation of Maple’s staff for continuing to make these experiential learning opportunities available to our students.

Discussion/Information Items
Social Studies Curriculum Report

Thank you to Jessica Braiman, Anna Davis, Heidi Fletcher, Margaret Janavicius, Dena Kelly, Sallie Magruder, Sharon Latek, Nadine Lee, Joanne Roler, and Martine Reif, for presenting the continued evolution of our new grades 3-5 social studies curriculum implementation. They did a fabulous job sharing the advantages of the inquiry-based approach embedded within instruction and within the new materials/resources recently adopted.

2019 Summer School Report
Eleni Lamson and Ashley Grossheusch did an excellent job recapping last year’s popular Summer School that was successfully held at Willowbrook School due to the construction at Maple. This vibrant program served over 350 District 30 families, and work has already started to host this dynamic program in our New Maple School this summer! Thank you to Eleni and Ashley for their ongoing leadership of this program and their terrific presentation!

2020-21 School Calendar
The Board reviewed a draft 2020-21 School Calendar that represents a return to our typically structured calendar after two years of modified calendars that supported Maple’s construction. The draft calendar tentatively sets the first day of student attendance on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.

Two Teacher Institute Days are tentatively set to occur at the beginning of the year and will take place on Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 18. The last day of school is tentatively set for Wednesday, June 2, 2021, with emergency “snow” days spanning through Wednesday, June 9, 2021.

The draft calendar also continues student attendance and remembrances of veterans on Veterans Day (November 11). It also places an emergency “snow” day on Presidents Day (February 15), which will be a student attendance day if we have a day of school to make up before February 15.

We will also return our third Institute Day to Casimir Pulaski Day (March 1). The Board of Education will approve the draft 2020-21 calendar at its October 24 Board Meeting.
