Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley's February 27, 2020 Board Brief

Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley's February 27, 2020 Board Brief

Dear District 30 Family,

I am excited to be writing this Board Brief on our last day of school in February. We all have warmer and brighter days to look forward to as we progress toward Spring Break!

Our last Board Meeting included the following relevant items:

Personnel Report

A resignation was approved and the Board was informed of an FMLA.

All-Abilities Maple Playground Bid Awarded

The Board of Education approved Hacienda Landscaping Incorporated as the lowest responsible bidder to complete Maple’s All-Abilities Playground. Thank you to the students, staff, and parents who designed this active middle school space. Thank you also to our PTOs for their outstanding fundraising that provided a majority of the project funds!

Willowbrook Roof Replacement Bid Awarded

The Board also approved Elens & Maichin Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. as the lowest responsible bidder to complete Willowbrook’s roof replacement project. We have invested nearly $10M of maintenance and upkeep in our elementary schools over the past several years. As a result, our elementary schools remain in sound condition, despite remaining Health/Life Safety work and capacity issues, which we are working to resolve.

PERA-Frontline Resource Shared

Thank you to Heidi Fletcher, Katie Peterson, Cindy Sheridan, and Lisa Wolf for their excellent presentation about this year’s electronic evaluation resource, Frontline, that has been piloted by several individuals throughout the year. They shared their positive experience with this resource, as well as how it allowed us to customize our Danielson documents that streamlined and aided their evaluations throughout the year. They also highlighted data advantages the system will offer, and previewed next year’s strategic efforts that will roll this tool out for all of our teaching staff. Thank you to our teachers and administrative team who have helped guide our pilot throughout the year. Special thanks to Dr. Brown for spearheading this effort.

Wescott School Report

Dr. Brown’s Wescott School Report warmly reflected on our talented students and staff that bring the magic of Wescott to life. He shared this year’s theme, “World Wide Wescott,” curricular work, reviewed their robust school-improvement goals, Wescott Wows, birthday celebrations, and the positive impact of the shared leadership that is flourishing at Wescott. Thanks also to David Karnoscak for reflecting on the positive effects of his Professional Learning Team’s efforts throughout the year. Both painted an accurate and inspiring picture of the incredible accomplishments at Wescott!

The Board and I thanked Chris for his leadership on our Board Goals (PLTs and elementary capacity), our electronic evaluation pilot, the before and after-school care programs, and for his collegiality with our team and Dr. Carlson. We also recognized his continued positive impact on Wescott School.

Strategic Planning Update

Our administrative team provided an update of progress on our District 30 Board Goals:

Goal 1: Increase District 30’s capacity to systemically collaborate within grade-level teams to execute the cycle of continuous instructional improvement by:

  1. Reviewing local assessment data in teams
  2. Implementing structured protocols for the analysis of student work and problem-solving (critical friends group, grade-level teaming, curriculum development, prep/planning, and instruction)
  3. Teaching and building capacity for understanding norms and protocols to utilize with our teaching staff
  4. Communicating the cost-neutral solution to provide time for meaningful grade-level collaboration that will be implemented by 2020-21

Goal 2: Ensure District 30 facilities possess the capacity to support our evolving and emerging programs and contribute to optimal educational experiences by:

  1. Finalizing and closing out the Maple Construction Project
  2. Updating the Master Facility Plan to:
    1. Support flexible furniture for grades 3 through 8
    2. Finalize and install flexible furniture plan for grades K through 2 to support our educational vision
    3. Continue planned progress on Health/Life Safety facility updates
    4. Begin planning to solve our elementary enrollment/facility capacity issues
  3. Communicating the need for long-term solutions that respond to elementary enrollment/facility capacity challenges through the Master Facility Plan

Thank you to our team and everyone involved in our improvement efforts this year.

Let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to join us at our next Board Meeting at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 19, at Maple School. All are welcome!
